The 2026 Mental Wellness Symposium, hosted at the historic Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus from May 31 to June 3, is a premier four-day gathering focused on advancing mental health awareness, education, and resources for the fire service and first responder communities. Co-produced by the First Responder Center for Excellence and the University of Iowa, this symposium blends academic research with frontline practitioner experience to deliver the most current, evidence-based approaches to first responder mental wellness. Topics covered across the four days include occupational stress and cumulative trauma, the neuroscience of PTSD in emergency responders, critical incident stress management, behavioral health program implementation for fire departments, the peer support counselor model, and leadership strategies for building psychologically resilient departments. The symposium features nationally recognized keynote speakers, interactive breakout workshops, panel discussions with first responders who have overcome their own mental health challenges, and networking dinners that foster genuine peer connection. University researchers will present cutting-edge studies on first responder wellness interventions, and participants will leave equipped with practical, implementable tools for themselves and their departments. The beautiful University of Iowa campus provides an intellectually rich and welcoming environment. Continuing education credits are available for participating first responders. This event is open to all fire service personnel, law enforcement, EMS, dispatchers, mental health professionals serving these communities, and department administrators. Investing in your mental health is investing in your mission. Be here.
