The SHIFT Mental Wellness for First Responders Conference 2026 is a landmark two-day event taking place April 7–8, 2026 at the Hagerty Center in the scenic lakeside city of Traverse City, Michigan. Organized by MIREMS, this nationally recognized conference is purpose-built for first responders seeking to build mental resilience, prevent burnout, and heal from the invisible wounds of a career in public safety.

SHIFT — which stands for Supporting Heroes In First responder Transitions — addresses the growing mental health crisis in public safety with an evidence-based, stigma-free approach that meets first responders where they are. The conference draws EMS professionals, firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and emergency management personnel from across Michigan and the Midwest.

Over two intensive days, attendees engage with nationally acclaimed speakers, peer support leaders, and mental health professionals who specialize in first responder wellness. Sessions are approved for Continuing Education (CE) credits in multiple disciplines, making SHIFT both personally transformative and professionally valuable. Topics include operational stress injury, peer support program development, suicide prevention and intervention, substance use awareness, sleep deprivation impacts, and building department-wide cultures of wellness.

The Hagerty Center's stunning waterfront setting on Grand Traverse Bay provides a therapeutic backdrop that complements the conference's healing focus. Attendees frequently note that the combination of high-quality programming and the restorative natural environment creates a uniquely powerful experience unlike any other first responder event.

SHIFT 2026 represents MIREMS's ongoing commitment to ensuring that the heroes of Michigan's emergency services communities have access to the same quality mental wellness resources they work so hard to provide for others. Registration fills quickly — secure your spot early.
