The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk in Baton Rouge starts at the Robert A. Bogan Fire Museum downtown and honors FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in full gear to reach the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.
Runners, walkers, families, and first responders all take part. It is common to see firefighters and police officers on the course in their gear, which makes for a moving sight. You can run for time or walk at your own pace.
Money raised supports the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which pays off mortgages for the families of fallen first responders and service members and builds mortgage free smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans.
This is a welcoming community morning for anyone in the Baton Rouge area who wants to remember 9/11 and give real help to families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty.
