While the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in October is the fire service's most solemn observance, this summer rally is intentionally celebratory — a chance to recognize the living heroes of the fire service, to thank the families who share their loved ones with the community every single shift, and to affirm the brotherhood and sisterhood that makes the fire service one of the most extraordinary institutions in American life. The rally features demonstrations of modern firefighting technology and equipment, a historic display tracing the evolution of the American fire service from bucket brigades to today's specialized rescue teams, live music and food celebrating the diverse communities that fire departments serve, a formal recognition ceremony honoring firefighters who have gone above and beyond, and family activities that welcome children and community members to meet and thank their local firefighters. The National Fire Academy campus in Emmitsburg provides a historically rich and stunningly beautiful setting for this celebration — surrounded by the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland, the campus itself is a tribute to the professionalism and pride of the American fire service.
