Symposium in the Sun is a leadership conference built for the people who run volunteer and combination fire departments. Hosted by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, it brings chiefs, officers and future leaders to Clearwater, Florida for four days in November.
Volunteer and combination departments face their own set of challenges, from recruiting and keeping members to managing budgets and building strong teams with limited time. Sessions focus on workforce solutions, leadership and officer development, with practical ideas attendees can take straight back to their stations.
Networking is a big part of the draw. Leaders get to compare notes with colleagues from departments all over the country who are dealing with the same problems. Vendors are on hand with tools and equipment aimed at keeping every member of the crew safe.
Most of America's fire departments rely on volunteers. Investing in the people who lead them helps protect a huge share of communities across the country.
